Where ever possible we prefer to find the material locally to the building.
The best replacement materials are normally local because they have characteristics perculiar to the area, when years ago most towns and villages had their own brick kiln or quarry nearby.
Recently we excavated a floor to improve headroom. We decided to remove the bedrock with wedges and levers so there would be a good quantity of large stones suitable for building the extension. There was plenty and gave an excellent match. The bedrock would have been machined out on most other builders sites and so battered into rubble only suitable for fill; then stone bought and brought in.
Mortar
The mortar mix selected for a project depends on the type of building. There may be several mixes for different parts of the same building but all will involve the use of lime in one form or another. A lime mortar is also preferred for new build projects. To find out more about the benefits of building with lime mixes please click on the Lime link.
